Phoenix Wharf - Emigration centre
This is a beautiful handmade ball point pen with gold coloured fittings. The comfortable shape in the hand is complemented by the wonderful natural feel and warmth of the wood. The pen has Phoenix Wharf engraved as can be seen in the photographs.
The wood in this pen was taken from Phoenix Wharf Plymouth during the restoration work in preparation for the Mayflower 400 celebrations in the city in 2020.
The Emigration Depot in Plymouth was constructed in 1847 encompassing most of the area around the original Mayflower steps. Phoenix Wharf was used from 1847 for over 50 years to allow the loading of passengers bound for a new life in America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The Emigration depot was one of the most popular in the uK as it had some of the best facilities to house up to around one thousand emigrants while awaiting passage. At its height a record of 1800 people left in a single week.
If your ancestors sailed for the new worlds from Plymouth after 1847, this may well have been the last part of England they set foot on!
The pen accepts standard Cross® type refills. It will be shipped in the recyclable black card presentation case as pictured, along with a certificate giving details of the wood and featuring on the reverse side a print of a stunning painting by Gordon Frickers, the image shows the emigration centre at its height. A fine art print is available at www.frickers.co.uk
All pens are handmade by me beginning with rough cut woods for the body. The body of the pen is turned on a lathe to the final shape as seen on each pen. The body is then sanded, sealed, waxed and polished to its final finish. Assembly is completed by using pre-made high quality pen components for long lasting performance.
